1. Origin
Watermelon is believed to be originated from West Africa. It is a flowering plant , but also found growing in the wild in central Africa.
2. Top Consumers
A survey in 2018 shown that China is the most consumer of Watermelon followed by Turkey, Iran and Brazil. India is not even in the top 5 . That was a surprise for me, i thought we eat a lot of watermelon.
3 Top Producer
Now i understand why China is the most consumer of watermelon. They are the largest producer of watermelon too. They produces about 79,244,271 tonnes per year followed by Turkey. Coming to India, Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer followed by Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
4. Heaviest Watermelon
According to Guinness World Record, the heaviest Watermelon weighs 159 kg and was grown by Chris Kent of Sevierville, USA.
5. Japanese square watermelon
All of us seen photographs of square shaped watermelons. Have you ever searched about it's origin or secret behind the shape? The Japanese grow this square watermelon by placing square glass boxes around a growing fruit, so that it becomes square in shape. Now, the question is why they do that? They like it because they can keep it in the refrigerator easily because of the flat bottom.
6. Watermelon seed spitting
We all spit the seeds of watermelon, but how many of you heard about watermelon seed spitting competition in US. Who will be the man with world record in this competition? Jason Schayot from USA holds the world record for spitting watermelon seeds at an incredible distance of 75 feets 2 inches!
7. Fruit or Vegetable
Most of know that watermelon is a very tasty fruit. But i am saying that it is both a fruit and vegetable! Since it grows from a seed and also have sweet flavour and refreshing qualities, you can consider it as a fruit. But we have to understand the fact that watermelon is also a vegetable, because it belongs to the same family of cucumber, pumpkin and squash called Cucurbitaceae family. 8. Seedless Watermelon
Seedless watermelons are hybrid watermelons which is created by crossing a watermelon with 22 chromosomes with an another watermelon with 44 chromosomes. These watermelon produce immature white seeds which are edible.
9. Yellow Watermelon
When thinking of watermelon , we get an image of a round shaped, green in outside and nearly red inside fruit. But, from the past few years , yellow fleshed watermelons are available in the shops. Do you ever searched why it is yellow inside? All the vegetables pr fruits get their pink or red color due to an antioxidant called lycopene. Even the tomatoes are red in color due to the presence of lycopene. So, now the answer is simple , those watermelon which lacks lycopene is white to yellow in color.
10. Watermelon sweetness
Suppose you are a shopkeeper, and a customer asks you for a watermelon with Brix scale greater than 9. Don't get feared, Brix scale is used to measure the sweetness of watermelons.
watermelons having brix scale of 7.8-8.2 is somewhat sweet , 8.3-9 is sweet and those with greater than 9 is very sweet.
